“One day, Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire Cat in a tree. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘Where do you want to go?’ was his response. ‘I don’t know’, Alice answered. ‘Then’, said the cat, ‘it doesn’t matter’ “
Where are we headed?
My friend said; “I’ve come to terms with my life. I’ll just ‘carry on’”.
Because ‘that’s what you do’. You grow up, you work for money, you settle down, you raise a family, you have struggles, you die. And in between you try to have some fun and go on holiday to escape the work-life (and possibly home-life too) that you’ve created for yourself.
So many of us have been taught to believe that an uninspired, unnatural life is actually ‘normal’. However, isn’t an inspired life actually natural and an uninspired life unnatural? Something’s gone wrong…
Whether or not my friend knows it, she is an amazing human being with talents, abilities and creative powers that she can barely imagine! When I think about the miracle of life, to me this can only mean one thing; the miraculous is already encoded within us.
When I recently came across the books and talks of Nick Williams (author of ‘The work we were born to do’), I really resonated with him believing that our soul thrives on and comes alive through inspiration. In the presence of inspiration, things awaken in you. You remember things. He believes that on a soul level, each of us has made a promise to brighten this world in some way, but we tend to bury and forget that promise.
A direct lead to our Soul
As a teenager, I found myself really disliking small children .. The noise!! The whinging!!
But when I started child-sitting for my cousins to earn some pocket money, I would be reading them stories and sing some songs, we’d do some artwork together or bake cookies. I loved their innocence and their eagerness to learn. We inspired each other. And .. they were not whingy! Because I was involved with them doing things they loved doing. I realised though that their whole upbringing was going to be based on what adults told them to believe and how to behave…
So I guess there I was, invited (by my soul) to think with a greater mind and expand my consciousness, awakening my natural self .. to work with the mind-body-spirit connection for balanced health! But, I ignored it. I followed the advice of the adults saying it was ‘stupid’ and it ‘won’t bring in the pennies’.
Being a bit of a stubborn Aries though, I went into General Nursing because it’s ‘helping people’, and then I went on to get a degree in health promotion. I had varied career roles and travelled the world; I’ll never regret anything I got to experience. But all along, something was missing and when I was 37, I did a Reflexology Course to set up my own business! I have never looked back and have learned to trust my inner voice and follow it willingly (eventually 😉)
The trap of waiting for inspiration
How do you navigate your path to find your joy and what you feel it really is you are meant to be doing, and help others to do the same? Think ‘Alice in Wonderland’ – there isn’t really any path there at all. It is not decided that when you go off into a certain direction that you are guaranteed to be on track, that you will succeed, that there won’t be any painful experiences .. As Nick Williams puts it; ‘inspiration evolves you and invites you to shed old ideas and step into a greater sense of yourself’.
We get caught in the trap of waiting for inspiration – waiting to feel inspired enough. We have some ideas, but we aren’t following through on them. We think or hope that once we have found inspiration we are off on the track for the rest of our lives. But our sense of inspiration constantly evolves, to bring forth greater and more authentic work. Inspiration should not be an occasional visitor but a regular companion, and it needs nourishing, nurturing and welcoming.
You’re my inspiration
So, what is your relationship with inspiration today? Do you welcome it, embrace it and willingly follow it? Or are you very quick to dismiss your inspired ideas as deluded or scary, or do you keep telling yourself that at some time in the future you will listen to that voice …
